In 2024, the monitoring platform Falconfeeds.io recorded 175 cyber incidents in Switzerland, including 60 DDoS attacks, 43 data breaches, and 37 ransomware attacks.
The pro-Russian group Noname057(16) was a key player in politically motivated DDoS attacks, particularly targeting events such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) in January and the Ukraine peace summit in June at Bürgenstock.
For ransomware incidents, the group 8Base was notably active, followed by Black Basta and Lockbit.
The most affected sectors included consumer goods and services, technology and IT services, as well as manufacturing and industrial organizations.
Expert Analysis:
The surge in politically motivated DDoS attacks in Switzerland highlights the growing use of cyber operations to influence geopolitical events.
The prevalence of ransomware groups such as 8Base and Black Basta demonstrates the ongoing financial incentives driving cybercriminal activity. Companies in the most targeted sectors must adopt proactive security strategies, including regular vulnerability assessments and employee training, to mitigate the risk of attacks.
While Switzerland reported fewer incidents than its neighboring countries, this should not be viewed as a reason for complacency. Instead, it offers an opportunity to evaluate and enhance existing security measures to effectively counter future threats.
